About our pigs:
We raise a small herd of Tamworth pigs. These beautiful and intelligent animals are a heritage breed that was first domesticated in the early 1800s in Tamworth, England from wild Irish hogs. They are listed as “threatened” or “vulnerable” in the USA and the UK, and we are proud to be playing a small part in supporting and spreading awareness of this wonderful breed.
They are distinct in several ways from the common “pink pig” (typically Yorkshire) that is raised on the vast majority of industrial pork farms: The most noticeable difference is their reddish-brown hair, but of greater significance is their ability to thrive on pasture, in forests, and within Ontario’s wide-ranging climate.
All of our pigs have been raised on pasture with lots of room to roam, play, and forage, and have been fed organic feed grown on a neighbor’s farm.
These pigs take much longer to reach market weight than conventional pigs, but we believe that the superior flavour and texture of the meat is worth the extra time and cost.
If you have any questions about our pigs, please ask! We love to talk about our farming practices.
